The Declaration of Human Rights
On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."
PREAMBLE
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

"Crumbs From Your Table"
From the brightest star,
Comes the blackest hole.
You had so much to offer
Why did you offer your soul?
I was there for you baby
When you needed my help.
Would you deny for others
What you demand for yourself?
Cool down mama, cool off
Cool down mama, cool off
You speak of signs and wonders,
I need something other.
I would believe if I was able,
But I’m waiting on the crumbs from your table.
You were pretty as a picture,
It was all there to see.
Then your face caught up with your psychology.
With a mouth full of teeth
You ate all your friends.
And you broke every heart
Thinking every heart mends.
You speak of signs and wonders,
I need something other.
I would believe if I was able,
But I’m waiting on the crumbs from your table.
Where you live should not decide
Whether you live or whether you die.
Three to a bed
Sister Ann, she said
Dignity passes by.
You speak of signs and wonders,
I need something other.
I would believe if I was able,
I’m waiting on the crumbs from your table.
"I'm Tony Campolo, from Eastern University. Every day, 63,000 people die of AIDS. There are 13 million orphans in Africa because of the AIDS crisis. To put it in perspective, by the year 2020 it will be 40 million children unless we do something. I was in Africa not too long ago. I was talking to a mother, and she said 'Pray for me.' I said 'Why? Why should I pray? What do you want me to pray about?'. She said 'Pray that my children die before I do.' I was stunned and then I realised why she was praying this prayer. She had AIDS, her children had AIDS. And she knew that if she died first her children would be on the streets begging, covered with sores, until the day that they died. I've been on the streets of Harari when the truck went through, early in the morning, picking up the corpses of children who had died. Orphaned children. Died because of AIDS. Died because of hunger. Died because of poverty. We can't let that happen. You know, sometimes I hear Christians say stupid things like, 'AIDS is the judgement of God upon people who are sinful.' That's two-thirds of all the 40 million people who are suffering from AIDS today. Two-thirds of them. Are totally victimized by others. So don't give me this stuff, 'It's God's judgement.' The Christian faith requires that we respond to this emergency. Mother Teresa once said, 'Everytime I look into the eyes of someone suffering from AIDS, I have this eery awareness that Jesus is staring back at me.' Consider what it says in 1 John 3:17. If you have this world's goods, if you have the wealth of this world, and you see brothers and sisters who are in desperate need. And you keep what you have while they suffer, how can you say 'I have the love of God in my heart.' Fair question. If you don't love the person in need, please don't say you love God, because the Bible says you're a liar. That's tough, that's tough word. But that's the truth. You're a liar if you do not love God by loving other people.
So what can you do today? The first step is to join the One Campaign. The One Campaign is an effort to rally Americans with one voice, and one goal. To fight global AIDS and poverty. To join the One Campaign go to www.theonecampaign.org. I'll give you that again, www.theonecampaign.org and sign the declaration today, commit yourself to respond to this crisis. Do it. Do it now. This is a time of desperate need, as well as a time of incredible opportunity. If ever we in America are going to show that we care for the people of Africa, this is the time to do it. And there's hope. If we respond, we can turn this thing around. I know we can. This is the time for us to be one. Be one in the spirit. To be one in the Lord. To be one with our African friends, so that together we might create a better tomorrow."
"Hi, I'm Chris from Coldplay. Unfair trade rules are keeping families around the world poor and stopping them from getting out of extreme poverty. But it doesn't have to be this way. Right now the world's most powerful governments are making deals that can either break this cycle of poverty or continue along the path that keeps millions of people living on less than a dollar a day. Please call the White House and tell President Bush that you support action to make trade fair. Call 1 202 456 1111, or visit www.maketradefair.com for more information."

"Equality for Africa. That's a big, expensive idea. You see, the scale of the suffering numbs us into a kind of indifference. What on earth can we all do about this? Well, much more than we think. We can't fix every problem, but the ones we can I want to argue we must. And because we can, we must. This is the straight truth, the righteous truth. It is not a theory. The fact is that ours is the first generation that can look disease and extreme poverty in the eye. Look across the ocean to Africa and say this and mean it. We do not have to stand for this. A whole continent written off. We do not have to stand for this. Last year, at DATA, this organization I help set up, we launched a campaign to summon this spirit in the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. We're calling it the One Campaign. It's based on our belief that the actions of one person can change a lot. But the actions of many, coming together as one, can change the world. Well, we feel that now is the time to prove we're right. There are moments in history when civilization redefines itself. We believe this is one. We believe that this could be the time when the world finally decides that the want and loss of life in Africa is just no longer acceptable. This could be the time that we finally get serious about changing the future, for most people, who live on planet Earth. A lot of people are getting together and working under this umbrella I told you about earlier, the One Campaign. I think they just have one idea in their mind, which is: Where you live in the world, should not determine whether you live in the world. History, like God, is watching what we do. When the history books get written I think our age will be remembered for three things. Really it's just three things that this whole age will be remember for. The digital revolution, yes. The war against terror, yes. And what we did, or did not do, to put out the fires in Africa. Some say we can't afford to. I say, we can't afford not to. Thank you."

"One"
Is it getting better,
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you
Now you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life
When it's one need in the night.
It's one love,
We get to share it.
It leaves you baby
If you don't care for it.
Did I disappoint you,
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without.
Well it's too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light.
We're one but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One
Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus,
To the lepers in your head?
Did I ask too much,
More than a lot?
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got.
We're one but we're not the same,
We hurt each other, then we do it again.
You say love is a temple,
Love a higher law.
Love is a temple,
Love the higher law.
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl.
And I can't be holding on to what you got,
When all you got is hurt.
One love, one blood, one life,
You got to do what you should.
One life with each other,
Sisters, brothers.
One life but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
